Microblading or Permanent Makeup: Which One Is Right for You?

Updated May 2026By Eugene Kay10 min read

The world of eyebrow enhancement has evolved dramatically over the past decade. Where "microblading" was once the only buzzword in semi-permanent brow treatments, today's clients have a range of sophisticated options under the broader umbrella of permanent makeup (PMU). If you're researching your options in Los Angeles, this guide will help you understand the key differences between microblading and modern permanent makeup techniques — and which one might be the best fit for your skin, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a manual semi-permanent tattooing technique where a handheld tool with a row of ultra-fine needles (a "blade") is used to create thin, hair-like incisions in the skin. Pigment is then deposited into these tiny cuts, creating the appearance of individual eyebrow hairs. The technique became wildly popular around 2015-2018 because it offered a more natural alternative to the solid, blocky eyebrow tattoos of previous decades.

When performed by a skilled artist on the right skin type, microblading can produce beautiful, realistic results. However, the technique has significant limitations that have led many PMU professionals — including our team at Eugene Kay Beauty — to recommend alternative methods for most clients.

Limitations of Microblading

While microblading has its place, there are several important considerations:

  • Skin type sensitivity: Microblading strokes tend to blur, spread, or fade unevenly on oily and combination skin. The manual blade creates wider incisions that allow pigment to migrate, especially when excess sebum is present.
  • Shorter longevity: Microblading typically lasts 12-18 months before requiring a full redo, compared to 2-3 years for machine-based techniques like powder or ombre brows.
  • More invasive: The manual blade creates deeper cuts than a PMU machine, leading to more trauma to the skin, longer healing times, and a higher risk of scarring with repeated sessions.
  • Fading patterns: As microblading fades, the individual strokes can become patchy or develop a grayish/blue undertone, especially if the wrong pigment was used or the skin type wasn't ideal.
  • Touch-up frequency: Most microblading clients need annual touch-ups to maintain the look, making it more expensive over time compared to machine techniques.

What Is Modern Permanent Makeup?

Modern permanent makeup encompasses several machine-based techniques that have largely replaced microblading as the gold standard in the industry. These include:

  • Powder Brows: A soft, even shading technique that creates a filled-in, airbrushed look. Ideal for clients who want a polished appearance similar to brow powder.
  • Ombre Brows: A gradient technique — lighter at the front, darker at the tail — that mimics natural brow growth patterns. Considered one of the most natural-looking options.
  • Nano Hairstrokes: Machine-created individual hair-like strokes that are finer and more precise than microblading. Offers the hairstroke look without the limitations of a manual blade.
  • Combo Brows: Combines nano hairstrokes at the front with ombre shading through the body and tail for the most natural, multi-dimensional result.

Which Should You Choose?

For the vast majority of clients, we recommend machine-based permanent makeup techniques over traditional microblading. The results last longer, heal better, work on all skin types, and carry less risk of scarring or uneven fading. The technology has advanced to the point where machine hairstrokes (nano technique) can achieve the same realistic hair-like appearance as microblading, without the drawbacks.

If you have dry to normal skin and specifically want the hairstroke look, nano hairstrokes or combo brows will give you that result with better longevity. If you have oily or combination skin, powder brows or ombre brows are definitively the better choice — microblading strokes simply don't hold well on oily skin.
